Timbered Workbench: Early American Style

Experience timber framing and fine woodworking techniques and tools to build a sturdy workbench. In this class, students will build a bench based in the early American style using mortise and tenon joinery out of white pine timbers. From timber to table, the benches hold a rustic quality with opportunities to add hand tool finishes on surfaces and edges. The trestle table is an engineering marvel. Held together with wedges, the classic form is remarkably strong yet can be easily disassembled. The portable, knock-down features of this workbench make it a versatile addition to any workspace and easy to load to bring home. The dimensions of this workbench are 37"H x 72"L x 32"W, with some variations possible. Options for finishing will be discussed, ranging from natural oils to milk paint. For workbench enthusiasts, we will discuss vises and work holding methods.

This course offers a partner model: two students can build one project for one tuition and materials fee. Students ages 16+ may register for this course independently. Youth ages 14+ are welcome to register with an adult. Adult/youth pairs will complete 1 project and pay 1 materials fee. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full-paying adult; call to register.

Required Tools

  • All tools will be provided. However, if you have a favorite square, drawknife or block plane bring it along. If you don't own tools and plan to buy them, it is perhaps better to wait until after the class at North House in which we will discuss tools and the right tools to buy. When you return home with your bench, you may want to use an orbital sander on the table top before oiling.
  • Personal protective equipment: safety glasses and hearing protection are provided for students and required for certain tools in our workshops, but you may wish to bring your own for fit and comfort.

Optional Tools

  • Square
  • Drawknife
  • Block plane
  • Mortising chisels-wide and narrow
  • Electric drill
