Forgework Skills Refresher

This course is designed for students who are interested in brushing up their skills before taking on more complex metalwork projects. For those who have worked at a forge before but it’s been a while, or those determined beginners who want to jump into the deep end of blacksmithing, this course provides an opportunity for practice and skill-building. Students will learn by demonstration, and then try out the techniques for themselves. The course will cover the following topics: safety in the shop, a brief history of forging, basic fuel types, fire building and tending, hammering techniques, and basic steel manipulation. Students are encouraged to register for one of the following “Decorative Ironwork” series, but can also use this as an opportunity to jumpstart their home practice. Several books illustrated with design ideas and methodology will be available for reference. Students ages 16 and up with appropriate experience are welcome to participate.
