Wool Pullover Shirt: Sew Your Own Using a Wool Blanket

Upcycle a well-loved or brand new wool blanket into a cozy winter pullover. In this class, you will learn why wool works so well and how to maximize its performance as clothing. Students will learn some basics of pattern making, construction, machine- and hand-stitching techniques, and transferable skills to sew other garments. The class wraps up by embellishing the shirt with antler or stone buttons and leather trim or optional decorative woven bands.

Students need to bring their own used or new wool blanket. This is a great opportunity to upcycle a blanket which may have worn spots as they can be hidden under a pocket or cut around. Different sizes of individuals need different sizes of blankets or sometimes two blankets. Students will be able to correspond with the instructor before class about the pattern size needed and about the choice of blanket.

Students should know how to operate a sewing machine.

Required Tools

  • Sharp fabric cutting scissors
  • Paper scissors to cut out patterns
  • Basic sewing kit with sewing snips, needles, pins, measuring tape, marking pencil and any other favorite sewing tools.
  • Please bring a personal sewing machine in good working order plus bobbins, extra needles, any attachments you have, and owner's manual (if you have it). The school has a limited number of machines, but you would be more comfortable using your own, if you can transport it. If you do not have a sewing machine to bring, contact the instructor to see if there is a machine available for your use.
  • Students bring their own blanket(s), thread, buttons, and embellishments (embellishments are not required). Some buttons and embellishments will be available in the school store or in the classroom for sale.

Optional Tools

  • Some sewers have preferences for sewing room aids such as magnifying lenses, portable full-spectrum lights, rotary cutters to use instead of scissors, cutting mats etc. All these are welcome, but not necessary.
