In this class, we’ll make a beautiful scarf and sturdy canvas and leather tote naturally dyed with plants, flowers, barks, and berries that we forage ourselves, as well as with plants provided by the instructor. On day one, we’ll learn about which local plants are best for natural dying, and will spend the rest of the day foraging for them. Students may also feel free to bring any natural plant matter that they may be interested in using for dyeing. On day two, we will bundle and steam dye the canvas for our totes and the linen for our scarves. On day three, we will sew up our bags and attach leather handles.
Be prepared to walk outside near campus (pavement, grass, rock beach) and potentially brave the elements! Sewing machine experience is helpful but not required. Feel free to bring your own sewing machine if you prefer, and be prepared to share the machines and tools provided by the instructor and North House. Youth age 16+ may register for this course.
