Ways of Weaving: Inkle, Rigid Heddle, Table, and Floor Looms

There are so many ways to weave. Perhaps you've heard of a floor loom or a table loom. But what is tablet weaving, and how is it different from an inkle weaving? When might you use a rigid heddle? In this class, students will experience a variety of ways to weave, the capabilities of each tool, and the different projects possible on each. This course provides a unique opportunity to see these systems side by side and gain insights into weave structure, strength, material choice, and product quality, helping the weaver choose the right tool for the job. By the end of the course, students should feel comfortable approaching a variety of warp styles and weaving methods and understand the best ways to utilize each tool. We will discuss and demonstrate the process of warping, with optional hands-on practice. Students should plan on making four items with a kitchen theme: a rep weave trivet, a small twill hand towel, an apron belt, and a recipe bookmark.

A materials fee of $60 will be collected in class by the instructor.

This class will require the use of fine motor skills, and students should be comfortable sitting for long periods of time.

This course is open to students ages 16+. Youth ages 12+ are welcome to register with an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete their own projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full-paying adult; call to register.
