Tie Up Magic: A Hands-On Look at Weaving Drafts

Have you taken a weaving class or two but still feel daunted by drafting? Or perhaps you have been weaving for some time but want to sharpen your draft reading skills.

In this class we will unlock the secrets of drafting by learning about the relationship between threading, treadling, and tie-up. Students will experiment with different treadlings and tie-ups to see how this affects the cloth. For our project, we will be weaving a set of four square napkins, each with a different weave structure.

In addition to exploration at the loom, we will discuss the theory of drafting and learn how to read a weaving draft. Students will come away with the ability to set up a loom according to a weaving draft and design their own weaving drafts. This class is suitable for newer weavers who wish to deepen their technical knowledge of weaving. Students should have the ability to sit for extended periods of time and to see fine details. This class is best for those who have tied up a loom once or twice, but enthusiastic beginners are welcome. Students ages 16+ may sign up for this course.
