Twill and Twine Bark Basketry

In this class, we'll be incorporating both twill and twine weaving techniques into a single, finely woven basket. This class is open to both beginner and more advanced weavers, with opportunities for students to challenge themselves with increasingly difficult techniques as the class progresses.  Many types of bark are flexible and strong enough to twill-twine and we’ll spend time talking about what tree species work well both in the North Woods as well as in more southerly latitudes, their various properties, when and how to harvest, and how to prepare different barks into weaving material. We’ll also discuss the cultural context of twill-twine weave structures and the historical and contemporary use of bark in basketry.

The basket we'll be weaving is small, which means it requires more dexterity and finesse than a larger basket. Having the ability to thread a needle is a good way to determine if one has the vision and dexterity needed.

Because of limited class time, most of the bark will be prepared for the students prior to the class. A materials fee of $65-$85 (depending on the size of basket and type of bark the student chooses) will be payable directly to the instructor while in class.
