Policy on ChatGPT and Other Generative AI Tools

Definition | Considerations | OLLI Policy

Generative AI is the term used for computer programs that generate responses to prompts that match the structure and patterns of the data they have been trained on. Some examples include ChatGPT, Bard, and DALL-E.

Many people may want to use generative AI tools to generate ideas, produce text, or just try them out. Here are some things to think about if you want to do so yourself:

  • Text generation tools, known as large language models, like ChatGPT, work like an advanced version of autocorrect. They use the patterns in the text they were trained on to fill in what sounds like it should come next. These models do not check to see if they are telling you something true. Assume that any answer you get from generative AI tools is wrong unless you cross-check it with verified sources.
  • Getting good results from generative AI tools requires putting in good prompts. This may take some refining or extra time.
  • Any prompt or other data you put into a generative AI program is stored by the company who owns the program and may be used to further train the program.
  • Tools trained on existing data tend to replicate existing biases. OLLI is committed to creating and maintaining a space in which everyone can have an equitable opportunity to thrive. We recommend reviewing anything you get from a generative AI program for bias.
  • There are copyright implications to generative AI produced work. Much of the work AI tools were trained on is protected under copyright laws, and multiple lawsuits allege that the work produced by AI tools is a violation of that copyright. Publishers and style guides may have suggestions about how to cite the use of AI in published or academic work.
  • While exact data is not available, given the computing power needed for generative AI to work, the environmental and climate impacts of the electricity needed to train and operate generative AI programs is estimated to dramatically exceed that of basic web searches.

OLLI Policy on Generative AI

  • Any work, such as writing or art, created by OLLI staff, volunteers, instructors, or members may not be put into generative AI programs without specific written permission from the person who created the work.
  • Photos taken at OLLI classes or events may not be put into generative AI programs without specific written permission from the OLLI office and each person in the photo.
  • Instructors who use generative AI to produce class content are responsible for verifying that the information is accurate.
  • Any use of generative AI by OLLI staff, volunteers, or instructors to create work used for OLLI must include a statement acknowledging the use of generative AI.
