Throughout history, people have fashioned materials into tools for sustenance, shelter, safety, and artistic creativity. Originally, cutting and chipping removed material from a simple wood or stone shape to produce a functional device. Then molding and forming processes, such as the potter’s wheel and bronze casting, expanded the complexity of shapes and materials. Now 3D printing, adding material bit by bit, extends manufacturing capabilities to previously impossible geometries and alters our thinking about design. We will discuss the evolution of 3D printing, the roles of local enterprises in its development, and its influence on shaping the future.
This course will meet online October 14, 21, 28, November 4, and 11.

Why did Hitler decide that Operation Barbarossa, a Vernichtungskrieg (war of annihilation) against the Soviet Union, should be launched in 1941? Intended to obliterate the Soviet Union and create a mega-Germany poised to take on the United States for global dominion, Barbarossa was the largest military operation in history, yet it failed. Why? Were there options that could have prevented the failure of Barbarossa? Were there alternatives to Barbarossa that could have altered the contours and even the outcome of World War II in Europe? This course will examine these and other questions emanating from Hitler’s most fateful decision of World War II.

What was happening in Naples, Lucca, and Livorno in the 1890s? Why did Italian opera composers turn from Verdi’s dynasty and put gritty struggles of common people on stage? When Mascagni composed Cavalleria rusticana in 1890, the opera caused one of the greatest sensations in opera history, ushering in the verismo movement. In 1892, Leoncavallo created Pagliacci, a tale of jealousy in a circus troupe. By 1900, Puccini reigned over the realistic style with his opera Tosca. In this course, we will discover how these composers—friends and rivals— revolutionized Italian opera.

We will read Macbeth carefully and explore these questions as they relate to the course of the tragedy. Participants will be encouraged to view notable productions.

Traditionally reserved for an artist’s greatest works, the term masterpiece now appears routinely in auction catalogues, raising questions also about how much the art market shapes our views. A portion of this course will be dedicated to such masterpieces as Velázquez's "Las Meninas" (1656), Picasso's "Guernica" (1937), Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party" (1974-79) and other favorites.

People are normally able to respond to a variety of pathogens using their immune system, in processes which we will explore. But sometimes the immune system is perverted from its beneficial role and turns on the host to cause autoimmune diseases and/or allow cancers to grow. Thus, the immune system can be seen as a friend to combat sickness or a cause of sickness when the body goes to war with itself.
This class will meet online August 27, September 3, 10, 17, and 24.
