NEW 10539 Women Translating Homer
NEW!
In the last few years, the very first translations of Homer’s works by female scholars raise the issue of whether a woman’s perspective offers new insights into the oldest poems in western history. After an introduction to the Iliad and the Odyssey and their genre as oral poetry, we will read and discuss Emily Wilson’s translation of the Odyssey and compare it to selected passages from other contemporary translations. Required text: The Odyssey, tr. Emily Wilson, W.W. Norton & Co., 2018.
