Apartheid, South Africa's state-sponsored system of institutionalized racial segregation and racism, ended dramatically in 1991 due largely to the inspirational leadership of Nelson Mandela. But the transition to a participatory democracy has been uneven at best, and the expectations of the 1990s have not been realized to date. In this course, we’ll examine the tragic legacy of apartheid and the contemporary challenges faced by this African nation.
