Based on the novella by Henry James, Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw is regarded by many critics to be his true operatic masterpiece. In this course, participants will examine the literary and operatic themes of The Turn of the Screw and consider them in the context of the University Opera Theatre’s 2005 production of the opera. Hisham Groover, conductor of a forthcoming 2021 production of the opera, will introduce the music, after which, participants will watch a recording of the earlier production (English, no subtitles) on their own time. In the final session, David Walsh, director of the Opera Theatre, will discuss the storyline—both the James’ version and Myfanwy Piper’s libretto—as well as his approach to the new production. There will be plenty of time for Q&A throughout both course sessions, and participants will be given access to a recording of the 2021 production once it becomes available.
Offered in cooperation with the University Opera Theatre.
