Classical archaeology is the excavation and analysis of the sites of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Using the physical remains of these long-ago places, Classical archaeologists are able to reconstitute the histories of ancient Greece and Rome, affording us with a vivid picture of the cultures that have influenced the Western world.
Using The Great Courses lectures of University of Louisville Professor John D. Hale, our focus will be part one of the series "Creating a Science of the Past," though which we will trace the origin of archaeology from the early excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii to the search for artifacts from the Trojan War in Troy.
