Recently, we have an increased appreciation for the sophistication of Native American cultures earlier dismissed or down-played. But did you know an advanced Native civilization flourished right here in the American Midwest? This was the Mississippian Culture which established cities and outlying settlements from Red Wing, Minnesota, and south to the Gulf Coast. This course will prepare you to plan your own field explorations, exploring key sites from Aztalan, a frontier outpost in Wisconsin, to the great capital of Cahokia near present day St. Louis, Missouri.
