30893 Mythology and Meaning via Ovid's Metamorphoses

Mythology is the oldest tool that humans have used to make sense of reality. Through two millennia, Greek myths have inspired artists working in every medium. This course will discuss the Roman poet Ovid's work "The Metamorphoses" and, through exploration of modern interpretations of mythology by anthropologists, psychologists, and historians, we will explore the many ways in which myth creates meaning.

Recommended reading: The Metamorphoses of Ovid, tr. Allen Bandelbaum (Harcourt Brace) or other translation.

NOTE: No class on 4/21.
