1492? Not really. It took three centuries following the Age of Exploration for Europe to assert its global dominance. We will focus on the period between the end of the Napoleonic Empire and World War I. Special attention will be given to the period of reaction and revolution in the 19th century, liberal-nationalism, socialism and Marxism, the Industrial Revolution and its social consequences, and the unification of Italy and Germany.
We will rely on a variety of free video excerpts and short recommended primary sources and scholarly readings.
