10733 Visual Art of the Civil War Era
How was the cataclysm of the American Civil War reflected in art of the mid-nineteenth century? This class will be an introduction to a variety of visual arts that thrived during the Civil War Era, including landscape and portrait painting, lithographic prints, photography, and cartoons. We will discuss both the influence the conflict had on artists (e.g., landscape artists representing the war metaphorically in paintings), and the role that these different art forms played in Americans’ lives (e.g., the importance of new portrait photography to families separated by war).
