In 1602, Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci, at the court of the Ming emperor of China, directed the creation of a large wall map in six panels measuring 12’x5’. In 2020, the map, which had been on loan to UMN since 2010, was formally gifted to the University as part of the collection of the James Ford Bell Library.
