CANCELLED 10749 The Theatrical Faces in East Asian Performing Arts
This class will explore traditional East Asian theatres that utilize masks and facial painting, including Korean masked dance, Japanese Noh and Kabuki and Chinese Beijing opera. We will address 1) how the mask and theatrical makeup in each art form symbolically represent the age, class, gender, and personalities of the characters and 2) how facial expressions effectively contribute to portraying dramatic events in the different genres. As an in-class activity, we will make a mask of a stereotypical character in the present and tell their stories.
