10750 North Korean Theatre/Performances, Film and Cultural Politics
This class will explore North Korean culture used for propagating the state ideology of self-reliance. We will watch video clips of North Korean revolutionary operas, films, and mass gymnastics. Then, we will address the following questions: how do the cultural products represent the historical narrative of oppression and exploitation by the imperialists-bourgeois, martyrdom and revolution and the view of the division and reunification of the Korean peninsula? How do they function to commemorate the foundation of states and glorify the state leaders?
