30929 Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass

Walt Whitman, perhaps America’s greatest poet, is the self-proclaimed poet of American democracy, the poet of the body and eroticism, and a great innovator in poetic style and subject-matter; he indeed (in his own words) “contains multitudes.” We will read the major poems from Leaves of Grass (his life work), including “Song of Myself,” “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking,” “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry,” and “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed.” The class will include a lecture component as well as student discussion.
