10751 An Introduction to Flamenco

This class will familiarize students with the origins, history, and classic forms of flamenco. We'll explore its Gypsy, Andalusian, Arabic, and Jewish roots; the disciplines involved in flamenco performance (dance, singing, guitar, jaleo), the forms that artists employ in their work (e.g. alegrias, bulerias, solea) and the work of performers including Christina Hoyos, Paco de Lucia, Vincente Amigo, and Remedios Amaya. Time permitting, we will also take a look at "flamenco fusion" and other forms of Iberia folk music, including Portuguese Fado, Galician Celtic music, and the Basque Jota.
