Mexico has a rich history stretching from the founding of Mexico's capital city, Tenochtitlan (today Mexico City), to the present day. One question continues to vex academics as well as everyday Mexicans and Mexican-Americans: what does it mean to be Mexican? This course will start with the precontact history of indigenous Mexico and continue to the Mexican diaspora of the present day. We will make stops along the way at important moments in Mexican history. Together we will learn how Mexican identity has been built, reshaped, and debated in the past seven centuries.
