10752 A Concerto is a Conversation

A concerto is essentially a musical conversation between an orchestra and solo instrument or group of instruments. We'll listen to some of the most famous concertos from Bach to Bartok, as well as some unusual ones, like Villa-Lobos' Concerto for Harmonica. We'll note in each case how the musicians converse with each other—echoing, arguing, or weighing in with new musical ideas. Along the way we'll learn about the composers, performers, and cultural contexts of the pieces. This class is geared for students who are interested, but not necessarily trained, in music.
