This course will explore the social and natural factors of disasters, with a brief overview of some of the major disasters that have spurred policy change. We will discuss how researchers and practitioners plan in the face of disasters, integrating all phases of the disaster cycle: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The course will wrap up with future-facing discussion of disaster planning and policy as we anticipate climate change to exacerbate risk. The course will be part lecture and part discussion.
