10755 Short Story Seminar
The short story is an elegant literary art form with a singular impact that is very different from the novel. Participants in this course will read and discuss a wide selection of engaging and provocative short stories that have been selected for their excellence. We will compare and contrast the stories in terms of style, subject, theme, mood and other literary characteristics. In addition, we will pay close attention to ourselves as readers, stopping as we read to ask how we are being affected and how the writer is accomplishing this. Among the writers under consideration are Tolstoy, Chekhov, Carver, Gordimer, Walker, Baldwin, du Maurier, Keegan, Oates, O’Brien and Erdrich.
