50075 Underground Art: The Story of Leningrad Nonconformist Artists

When the Soviet government renamed St. Petersburg and moved the center of culture to Moscow, its centuries-old art tradition didn't disappear. Instead, artists, often underground, continued the traditional realism and the ongoing experimentation of the early 20th century. Exploring this complex but relatively unknown art scene offers a context for both the official art and the underground artists. This presentation provides background to the current exhibit, "Leningrad Underground, " at The Museum of Russian Art. Tours of the exhibit will rely on insights from the presentation.
