10769 The Music of Scott Joplin

Scott Joplin (1868–1917), Texas native who centered himself in Missouri and New York City as an adult, was a pioneering African American composer and pianist best known for his “rags,” piano works with a characteristic melodic style and accompaniment pattern for the left hand, the most famous of which was the “Maple Leaf Rag.” His music achieved enormous popularity and influence in the early 20th century, then was revived to great acclaim in the late 20th century. His compositions included much more ambitious works than just short piano pieces, among them the opera "Treemonisha."
