RN Refresher- Includes all 3 sections (complete course)   


The purpose of the course is to prepare the inactive Registered Nurse for current employment with adult clients. Refresher program to meet the Washington State Professional Nursing requirements for the current practice set forth in the RCW and WAC. These requirements are monitored by the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission.

This hybrid program combines

  • Self-directed independent online study modules, approximately 50 hours
  • 40 hours - On-campus classroom content and lab skills
  • 160 hours - Supervised clinical practice experience


Online section begins in spring of each year, with 6-8 weeks to complete

Classroom content and lab skills refresher for 1 week ON PLU CAMPUS in Tacoma in June

Clinicals start as soon Skills Lab ends and through July

CLINICAL PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS Prior to entering the clinical setting, the RN Refresher student will meet the following health requirements: a. Hold a current license to practice registered nursing in Washington State with no encumbrances as those with an inactive or expired license who apply for reactivation through Washington State Department of Health. https://nursing.wa.gov/licensing/renew-or-reactivate-license
b Show evidence of liability (malpractice) insurance coverage for a minimum of 1,000,000/3,000,000..
c. Show evidence of a major medical, accident or sickness insurance coverage.
d. Completion of CPR for Health Providers that remains valid throughout the clinical experience. CPR must include 1 and 2 person, child, infant choking and AED.
e. Complete the Application.
f. Complete the Washington State Patrol Disclosure Affidavit. Return forms with our application to PLU CCNL. Include a Money Order or Cashiers Check for ___ payable to PLU School of Nursing.
g. Complete and sign the Release and Hold Harmless Agreement;
h. Completion of the Personal Health History form and all screening and immunization: TB Screening, MMR, Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox, Tetanus. https://cpnw.blob.core.windows.net/documents/clinicalPassport/Passport_fillable.pdf
i. Non-native English speakers will be required to demonstrate English proficiency using the TOEFL. Please contact 253.535.7683 for more information.
j. Successful completion of all RN Refresher Lab Skills sessions as evaluated by the instructors.
k. Be ready and available for clinical experiences on day and evening shifts or night shifts on any day of the week, including holidays. To facilitate your successful completion of the clinical experience other employment during this same 12-14 weeks as your clinical is highly discouraged. (There have been instances where participants were unable to successfully complete the program due to over commitments and fatigue).
l. Be able to meet the following list of Physical and Psychological Expectations of Nurses Returning to Professional Practice. (Insert pp 1-2: Physical & Psychological Expectations of Nurses Returning to Professional Practice) The student will also complete the online Clinical Orientation Program for the assigned agency, according to the Clinical Consortium. Clinical placement will occur with a preceptor.

Additional fees approximately $100-300 for background check, clinical placement, and misc. other details case dependent. Additional fees for a background check, vaccines, clinical placement, and other misc. throughout the program will be paid directly to those requesting entities.
