Sponsored by: HRSA Advance Nursing Education Workforce Grant, HRSA-17-067

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! Avoiding Retraumatization of Patients Who are Living in the Aftermath of Trauma

This 6-hour workshop will present a trauma-informed care framework to assist providers in helping patients manage the aftermath of trauma and abuse for children, adolescents, and adults. Participants will learn the neurobiology of the autonomic nervous system including the complexities of the polyvagal system as there are actually two major branches of the vagus nerve that each serve a very different purpose in the physiology of fear. Strategies to help patients and family members manage threat stimuli, defense responses, and survival circuits will be discussed.
