Cancer Sticks: The Corruption of Sacred Tobacco

Contemporary Cherokee Artist Karen Sixkiller offers beading workshops in collaboration with ʔaʔk̓ʷustəƞáwt̓xʷ House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse.

Make a bold statement with these edgy and stylish earrings designed by Karen Sixkiller, inspired by her exhibit Cancer Sticks: Corruption of Sacred Tobacco currently on display in the PC Longhouse. In this workshop, you’ll use brick-stitch bead weaving techniques to create intricate skull-and-crossbones plaques, then complete the design with a striking fringe of 20 miniature, lit cigarette beads. These conversation-starting earrings are a unique blend of art and activism.

While some needlework or beading experience is helpful, all levels are welcome to join. We provide everything you need, including size 11 glass seed beads, silver-plated earring hooks, and all other materials. Let your creativity spark in this unforgettable beading experience!
