Course fee: $145.00
Dates: 10/12/2023 - 11/16/2023
Times: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific Time
Days: Th
Room: Maier Hall E330-Main Campus
Instructor: Paula Hunt
Movies are designed to be invisible. Audiences are not meant to see the careful assembly of elements that result in an experience that is, inherently, manufactured. During this six-week course, students will learn how to "read a film" by unpacking its visual, aural, narrative, and linguistic components and understanding how they are manipulated to create a cinematic experience.
Students will watch six movies that are rich sources for analysis: four classic Hollywood productions, one movie from Australia, and one European production. The course requires students be "active," not passive movie viewers. This might mean watching a passage over and over again. Turning the audio off. Ignoring story and performance (which is what we tend to focus on) and concentrating on a specific element, such as lighting, color or sound.
