Explore the geology of three popular beaches on the Olympic Peninsula. Classroom presentation will be followed by a field trip to Beach 4, Ruby Beach, and Rialto Beach. Weather permitting, we will finish our field trip with a potluck BBQ on Rialto Beach.

Learn about the geological forces that shaped the Olympic Peninsula. Classroom presentations will be followed with an extensive field trip to important geological sites (Dungeness Spit, Hurricane Ridge, and Tongue Point). Students will view not only the natural beauty of the region, but also see first-hand the rocks and geological structures and landforms of the area.
Class Schedule:
- Friday, June 10, 5:30 - 8:00 pm: Classroom instruction at Keegan Hall M115 Geology Lab.
- Saturday, June 11, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm: Field trip.
Lunch break at around noon, and a potluck BBQ at Log Cabin Resort on the northwest end of Lake Crescent at around 5:00 p.m. Please be advised to wear durable walking shoes, bring something to drink and a sack lunch.
Class is in-person and socially distanced on the Peninsula College campus at Port Angeles. Students are required to review Peninsula College's COVID precautions.

- Intro to Hiking

Have you considered learning how to hike, but want to be prepared and not go alone? Starting out can seem so overwhelming, but this Intro to Hiking class can help get you well on your way to putting some miles on your boots! In this class you will learn all about wilderness safety, principles for Leave No Trace, handling emergencies, trip planning, simple tools and apps for navigation, how to put together your 10 Essentials, build a functional first aid kit, become familiar with some of local poisonous vegetation, how to deal with wild animals and more! At the end of the online class instruction, we will go on a beautiful day hike, apply what you have learned online, and have a picnic! So grab your boots and let's hike! More information will be emailed to registered students.
Students must be 18 years of age and must sign a student travel consent/release form.

Get introduced to the native plants during a relaxing stroll through the forest. This course will teach participants about the lowland forest plant communities that occur on the Olympic Peninsula. We will spend a few hours walking around Robin Hill Farm County Park identifying plants and learning about the ecosystem they create. Participants will be required to walk up to 2 miles over uneven ground. By the end of the class, participants should be able to identify common plants and discuss the importance of forest ecosystems

Learn the core skills that everyone who spends time outdoors should know -- shelter, water, and fire. Come away with practical life-saving skills, a deeper relationship with nature, greater confidence, and resources to share with your family and friends for fun and in emergencies. Topics covered include knife selection and skills, saw and axe skills, fire building, shelter building, basic first aid, clothing and footwear, and mental preparation for survival and navigation. - Outdoor Skills for Survival - Continued Field Day with Overnight

The culmination of the Outdoor Skills class: put your knowledge to the test by building a shelter and spending the night in it. We'll gather midday and spend the afternoon practicing and deepening skills while preparing our shelters for the evening. Spend the night out now in a managed and planned way, so that when the unplanned overnight comes, you'll be ready. More information will be emailed to registered students. Students must be 18 years of age and must sign a student travel consent/release form.
Pre-requisite: completion of Outdoor Skills class to learn basics for overnight.
