Before Galileo: The Aristotelian View of Nature (is an unexpected delight)

The aim of this class is to turn you into an Aristotelian! The Aristotelian view of nature is often derided as simple-minded by students of the modern scientific revolution. In fact, it was a brilliant synthesis of much of the best natural philosophy before the modern era. The Aristotelian world-view is relentlessly rational and coherent, and is in many respects the true foundation of modern science. It is also interesting and delightful in itself. PS: The Aristotelian world-view provides an excellent – and often amusing – way to explain the natural world to your younger grandchildren!
