Six classes will cover short stories, which have become modern classics, from 1899 to 1967, from the turn of the twentieth century to the apex of the Black Arts Movement. Selected stories exemplify an evolution in style and gender from Charles Chesnutt through James Baldwin to Alice Walker. The text list includes a provocative emphasis for conversation. Each author provides two signatory tales. Charles Chesnutt, "Wife of His Youth"; (1899) (Prioritize past, present, or future?); James Baldwin, "Going to Meet the Man" (1965) (Promote a legacy of beauty or of social change?); Alice Walker, "In Love and Trouble" (1973). (Which young woman merits the trust to inherit and pass on [Toni Morrison's phrase) the family's wealth)? The course encourages senior conversations about the wisest legacy for future generations.

This class will trace the debate over the nature and role of women in America during eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century America. The three main "voices" in this debate were conservative (women were to be domestic, pure, pious), liberal (women should have rights equal to men), and radical (marriage should be abolished). But a covert "cult of passion" arose in response to all three of these arguments, suggesting that following one's feelings led to the highest virtue.

Our fellow Athenian Will Leitch has written a highly acclaimed novel titled How Lucky, set in our hometown. It has been called "as suspenseful and funny as it is moving--an unforgettable story of a fiercely resilient young man, Daniel, living with a physical disability, and his efforts to solve a mystery unfolding right outside his door." Daniel lives on Agriculture Drive! Will Leitch will discuss his book and his remarkable writing career, which spans the worlds of fiction, journalism, and broadcasting. He'll also make some jokes and answer every question anyone has. You might want to pick up a copy of How Lucky at Avid and bring it to the luncheon for Will to sign.
