In four 75-minute sessions, participants will practice drawing exercises using all the art supplies in several ways: speed scribble sketches of the figure, carefully observed contour drawings, object drawings using black, white and several grays, composing the rectangle and filling it with observed objects from still life setups. Participants will prep for these with mini quickie tonal tryouts or thumbnails sketches. Train your brain to see truthfully, through exercises in the suggested text/workbook Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

His Girl Friday is one of the most famous Hollywood comedies of all time, especially to film historians. Directed by Howard Hawks, it is a "marriage re-marriage" screwball starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. We will discuss its story, style and historical context (and racial insensitivity) within late 1930s American comedies. The HGF film has been called Hollywood's most talkative talky and its break-neck speed and fast-thinking protagonists prove it is also one of the best scripts ever written. Participants are encouraged to see the movie before class.
