George Cukor is known as a "woman's director," and many of his films feature strong performances by actresses. His films also offer meditations on the very definition of "woman." In this two-hour class, we will look at the 1964 musical My Fair Lady for the way Cukor explores (in collaboration with lyricist Alan Jay Lerner) the differences—and similarities—between the sexes. This topic is especially interesting in this script which features the creation of the "perfect woman" by a not-so-perfect man! Participants may wish to view the entire film prior to class, but relevant clips will be shown during class in order to serve as the basis for our discussion.
