This field-based class entails a guided tree walk on UGA North Campus to identify and learn uses of several native tree species. From this class, participants will learn easy techniques for tree identification, including examining leaves, bark, buds, flowers, and other features. Participants can then apply these skills to learn 15 native Piedmont tree species found on campus, including evergreen and deciduous species. The speaker will also mention other uses of the species visited, including whether or not a species is edible or has craft uses. The walk will begin at the UGA Arches, rain or shine, but will be cancelled in the event of severe weather.

The University of Georgia is one of the few campus law enforcement agencies in the country to have a full response Explosive Ordinance Disposal (bomb team) that serves as not only as a resource to the University community but also the neighboring areas surrounding us. The team consists of multiple EOD technicians who are certified in handling and rendering safe hazardous devices as well as multiple K-9 units that aid in the location of devices. The team is outfitted with a truck, robot, total containment vessel and numerous other items that they use when responding to incidents. The team will speak about the training that they undergo in order to be certified, the types of calls they respond to and showcase some of the equipment that they use while responding to calls. The truck and K-9s will also be at River's Crossing for the class.

In the decades following the Civil War, New York City built more monuments to the Union cause than any other city in the nation outside of Washington, DC. Ranging from simple standing soldiers to grand triumphal arches and temples, these monuments shaped commemorative aesthetics and iconography at the local and national levels. Unlike Confederate monuments, which were mostly initiated by private organizations, New York’s soldiers’ monuments were largely supported through city and state funding. These civic projects attracted the interest of competing groups—artists, politicians, veterans, and the public—who all sought to influence the growing commemorative landscape. Learn about the works and their creation in a fractious political landscape defined as much by municipal maneuvering as by artistic principle.

Reading Tim O’Brien’s deeply moving short story “On the Rainy River” as a springboard, this discussion course will offer an interdisciplinary critique of the Vietnam War, the antiwar movement, and Ken Burns’ 2017 PBS documentary. With consummate artistry, O’Brien dramatizes his distress, anguish, and increasing doubts about the morality and necessity of the war, a torment exacerbated by his community’s and family’s very different perspectives on Vietnam, U.S. foreign policy, “patriotism,” and the legitimacy of the domestic opposition. What lessons might that very polarized time be especially relevant in our own deeply-divided era?

Jubilee Partners is a Christian service community in rural Georgia, founded in 1979. Their primary work is to offer hospitality to refugees who have experienced violence or persecution. Jubilee offers a place for recovery and healing as well as practical supports such as language classes, legal resources and medical care. Jubilee is blessed with 258 acres of very pretty land, creeks, forest, three ponds—and lots of happy children. Come tour the grounds with founding director Don Mosley. After a brief intro to the organization, board the 14-passenger van on a driving tour to see parts of the community that you would not have time to see on foot, especially the part we refer to as the "Welcome Center," where most of our 4000+ refugees have each lived for at least a couple of months. There will be an option to stay after the tour for announcements and devotions and join the group for lunch in the main dining room.
