  • Petanque: The Greatest Game You've Never Heard of

  • Pétanque is an international sport from France, with opposing teams rolling or throwing metal balls at a wooden target-ball. Related to Italian Bocce ball, Pétanque has an ancient, fascinating history, provides many mental and physical benefits, and is quick and easy to learn. It is gentle on the body--requiring finesse, cooperative team strategizing, and brains-- not brawn. It is a game of concentration, coordination, camaraderie, and FUN. Come learn to play this quintessential part of French and world culture—and discover Pétanque. A short video to introduce you to Pétanque: https://youtu.be/YXUkofUi-ps

  • The Musical Mind: How Music Shapes Our Brain, Culture, and Life

  • Humans are inherently musical, so it is no surprise that musical experiences can significantly impact individuals. This seminar will explore how music affects humans socially, developmentally, cognitively, and culturally. We will investigate how our brains respond to music, how musical content can trick our brains into hearing things that are not present, how music can shape us as individuals from birth to death, and how cultural exposure affects our preference and understanding of musical information. Whether you enjoy music as a classically-trained musician, a pop-music fanatic, or a casual listener, you are likely never to consume music in the same way again.

  • Wisdom We Especially Need Now in Our Time of Existential Threats: Some of My Favorite Quotes and Some of Yours

  • Discussing the quotes and short passages from books and essays shared by the presenter should prove enlightening, thought provoking, and liberating. Plan to bring and share your favorite quotes, aphorisms, etc. If all too many bumper stickers are indeed lamentably simplistic, we fortunately also have available to us many nuggets of wisdom on those things that should concern us most. Although unfamiliar to most people, these sagacious insights can help us to think in fundamentally new ways, less cynically and more critically and empathetically.

  • Beyond Typhoid Mary: Typhoid Fever's Long Trail Through History

  • Nearly everyone has heard of Typhoid Mary, who was quarantined for the final decades of her life because she was a carrier of typhoid fever. But Mary was far from the first or last typhoid fever patient in history. Typhoid fever is an ancient disease, the presence of which in the historical record is hard to detect because of changing views and knowledge concerning the fever itself. In this class we’ll give Mary Mallon her due, but we’ll also take a typhoid tour through the deeper past.
