This presentation will focus on the history and evolution of FDA approved medicines derived from plants. A botanical drug product is intended for use in diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in humans and consists of vegetable materials such as plants, algae, or fungi. Unlike dietary supplements, botanical drugs undergo rigorous FDA review to demonstrate safety and efficacy and may be formulated as solutions, powders, tablets, capsules, topical applications, or injections. The FDA provides a Botanical Drug Development Guidance for Industry to facilitate the development of these complex mixtures.

Go behind the scenes at Five & Ten for an inside look at how an independent restaurant operates. This interactive program will explore the economics of restaurants, local sourcing and seasonality, menu development, hospitality, and the realities of running a modern dining room and kitchen. Participants will hear from the chef and pastry team, observe a butchery demonstration, discuss how relationships with local farmers shape the menu, and conclude with a seasonal lunch while continuing the conversation. Many people report experiences that seem to exceed ordinary explanation: striking dreams, synchronicities, sensed presences, near-death experiences, visions, and children’s memories of previous lives. Are such events simply products of brain chemistry and expectation, or might they suggest that consciousness and reality are stranger than we usually assume? This five-session course offers a thoughtful, accessible introduction to anomalous experience through psychology, religious studies, philosophy, and selected scientific research. We will examine both skeptical and expansive interpretations, consider major researchers and case studies, and ask what these experiences may reveal about the mind, the self, and the nature of reality.

In A Rake’s Progress (1732-34), 18th-century visual artist William Hogarth produces a series of eight paintings to reveal the story of Tom Rakewell, a young man who moves to London after inheriting his miserly father’s fortune. Without proper guidance on whom to trust and how to spend this money, Tom makes all the wrong choices. Hogarth’s “modern moral subjects” like this one and A Harlot’s Progress (1731) offer cautionary tales on contemporary topics and were wildly popular during his own time. Even today, Hogarth’s works are considered as recognizable elements of London’s rich visual culture. As part of our interactive discussion of A Rake’s Progress, we’ll look at both the paintings and corresponding engravings for this visual narrative along with an overview of Hogarth’s techniques used to create the series.

Long before the B-52's and R.E.M., Athens hosted one of the most active live R&B circuits in the South — and almost no one knew it. From 1953 to 1965, UGA fraternities booked James Brown, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, Ike & Tina Turner, and Marvin Gaye into rented lodges and chapter houses week after week. Drawing from a newly compiled database of more than 1,500 events, fraternity memorabilia, and dozens of oral histories, this class uncovers the forgotten scene that gave Athens its musical foundation. Audio, photos, and primary documents throughout. No preparation required.

Technology can both enhance and detract from our quality of life. A digital detox involves intentionally reducing or avoiding the use of electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, tablets, and social media. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate technology entirely but to create healthier boundaries, regain focus, and improve overall well-being.
