This class examines developmental disabilities and the types of supports needed to ensure quality of life for individuals diagnosed with them. Case studies will be presented and discussed, as well as regulations like IDEA and ADA, funding sources (Medicaid, Katie Beckett, NOW/COMP, Children's Medical Services). Natural resources that can be developed (and obstacles to developing them) will be analyzed. Also, local Athens-area supports that are available will be emphasized, and the class will generate ideas on ways each of us can participate to further support individuals in this special population.

How can communities divided by space, time, and resources collaborate to foster deeper self and societal awareness? How can one learning community’s writing practice contribute to another community’s learning process? These questions are being explored by students at UGA and incarcerated students enrolled in Common Good Atlanta’s higher education program. This correspondence facilitates a scholarly conversation about the humanities and its role in our personal and collective lives. In this informative session, Dr. Young will introduce her work and its impact. She will talk about prior collaborations, one the communities are currently working on, and engage attendees in broader brainstorms about future OLLI collaboration.

Here we encounter two seminal figures in American arts: Composer Aaron Copland and poet Emily Dickinson. Copland's settings of Dickinson's poems is a landmark in the vocal repertory of American music. We will be looking at a selection of these, discussing the poems and then their musical settings, to discover what makes them so expressive. A basic ability to read music would be helpful but certainly not required.

Whether a work of fiction or non-fiction, your book’s completion is a big milestone. But what is the next step in your publishing journey? Today, many successful authors choose to publish their own stories rather than using a book publisher. For self-publishers, Amazon is currently the most popular option. Is it your best option? If so, how do you go about placing your book on the Amazon platform, and how much time or money is necessary? This class provides a step-by-step guide for copyrighting, obtaining an ISBN, designing a book cover, correct formatting for Amazon publication, and creating an audio version of your book. Instructor Susan Carley is an Amazon author with two fiction works published under the book series The Dollhouse Fae Chronicle. She invested substantial time educating herself about the necessary steps in self publishing.
