Candidates behind in the polls often say that the only poll that matters is the one on election day. Well, no. Aside from predicting election results, polls influence campaign messaging, the allocation of campaign resources, fundraising success, and even voters' choices. This course offers a consumer guide to polls for this presidential election season: understanding poll results, distinguishing legitimate from illegitimate ones, and avoiding misinterpretation or overinterpretation. We consider concerns that have haunted polling during recent election cycles. Does the existence of “shy voters” lead polls to underestimate extreme candidates? Are exit polls useful? And are polls today hopelessly inaccurate?

The '24 Election is here! How can we make an informed choice? Let's 1) Review POTUS “Approval” history 1945-2020), 2) Explore how better voter polls are done, 3) Discuss major ’24 election issues and 4) Identify party positions. We’ll review the current polls and do some in-class survey exercises such as a typical Corporate Assessment Model (CAM) on the choice for POTUS. CAM is a "tool" to rank the issues AND the candidates! We will wrap up by doing a class electoral vote prediction, state-by-state! Just 1 in 20 voters actually decide an election! Be a better prepared voter!

In the 1980s and 1990s, demographic dynamics became considerably different from what American adults had experienced when they were growing up - things like Baby Busts replacing baby booms, new life stages after age 65, and increased racial diversity. By 2000, Americans had settled into the new perspective, but now we are undergoing another demographic transformation. One aspect, below-replacement fertility in many countries as well as here, goes against demographers' expectations as well as the public's. And population decline has entered the picture, even in the U.S. What might today's young generations confront as they mature?
