The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor (GGCHC) was established by the U.S. Congress in 2006 to recognize the unique culture of the Gullah Geechee people who have traditionally resided in the coastal areas and the Sea Islands of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. In this session, attendees will experience the rich culture of the region through performances by leading storytellers, singers and “ring shouters.” Along with the performance, a lecture and discussion will address challenges to sustaining this shared heritage of West Africa and the United States.

Tennessee Williams is most known as a playwright and Paul Bowles as a novelist, but in earlier years they, as poet and composer respectively, collaborated on songs that are an exquisite part of the American art song repertoire. This presentation will discuss Williams' poems and Bowles' musical settings in what will surely be a fun discovery! Some prior music knowledge will be helpful but is not necessary.

In this class, we will consider Leonard Cohen's 9th studio album, The Future (1992). Written during a time that witnessed both the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Los Angeles riots following the arrest and beating of Rodney King, this album is more political than most of Cohen's works. Among other things, it offers meditations on the nature and state of American democracy that still seem pertinent over 30 years after the album's initial release. Discussion will focus on the tracks "Democracy," "The Future," and "Anthem," but we will also consider the shape and nature of the entire album as it offers insight into Cohen's career as a singer/songwriter/poet and into the state of the world then and now.
