This course will consider the career of the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) by contrasting his two distinct types of images—extraordinarily beautiful, classically-inspired bodies and ethereal, practically-ineffable spiritual recreations. We easily recognize this opposition when considering his Apollo and Daphne alongside his Saint Teresa. Both are marble, both imitate emotion and motion, both illustrate texts, and yet one depends on concrete, touchable reality for its effect, and the other requires the viewer to recognize the impossibility of what one sees. Bernini, born at the tail end of the Renaissance, becomes by his death a sculptor not of the ideal, but of the divine. This course will trace that development.

Artists have drawn and painted human figures for millennia. Figure drawing is among the hardest art forms to master, and artists need human models. This course demystifies what modeling involves and introduces some unconventional opportunities like posing as patients at medical schools, even here in Athens. Modeling types from portrait to clothed figure to costumes to nude will all be discussed, with expectations and pay for each. Attendees interested in becoming personally involved will see examples of the model types posing and will learn how to join in at their own level of comfort.

Athens has one of the most vibrant and unique downtowns in the Southeast. It is continually reinventing itself through public art to become a creative center that has a huge impact on our community. Downtown's outdoor museum includes the iconic "We Let the Dawgs Out" Bulldawgs; Project Ginkgo lamp post mosaics; murals; and Harold Rittenberry's metal sculptures that tell a story. You'll learn where the ideas for Athens' unique public art come from, how it is funded, and who the artists are. Downtown Athens is truly a work of art.
