Tour the Little Rose Organics hydroponic lettuce farm where we will gather ingredients from the greenhouse and outdoor gardens to create a salad to accompany additional lunch items (homemade quiche from a neighbor's chicken eggs). We will also re-plug hydroponic towers from what we gather and re-seed replacement cups. Tips on automated watering systems in outdoor gardens will be shared.

This presentation will focus on the history and evolution of FDA approved medicines derived from plants. A botanical drug product is intended for use in diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in humans and consists of vegetable materials such as plants, algae, or fungi. Unlike dietary supplements, botanical drugs undergo rigorous FDA review to demonstrate safety and efficacy and may be formulated as solutions, powders, tablets, capsules, topical applications, or injections. The FDA provides a Botanical Drug Development Guidance for Industry to facilitate the development of these complex mixtures.

The UGA Trial Gardens in Athens were established in 1982. The primary functions of the garden have always been research, teaching, and new-crop introduction. The trials are planted in April and May and consist of major and minor bedding classes, tropicals, vines, plantings of specialty annuals, more than 150 free-standing containers, and three large perennial beds. The other major function of the garden is the evaluation and subsequent introduction of new crops for the greenhouse and landscape industries. The garden is open to professionals and the public.
