Travel virtually to places like Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Muscat, Oman, through the lens of an American who has lived and worked in the region for nearly a decade. Moving beyond headlines and stereotypes, the class examines the rhythms of daily life, cultural values, and social structures that shape contemporary Gulf societies.
Drawing on the presenter’s lived experience in the United Arab Emirates, students will be introduced to the nuances of cultural adaptation, language learning, and cross-cultural communication in a rapidly evolving region. Topics will include identity and belonging, the balance between tradition and modernity, and the role of music, language, and interpersonal connection in understanding culture from within.
Rather than a geopolitical or policy-focused approach, this seminar emphasizes human experience and cultural immersion, encouraging participants to reconsider assumptions and engage with the Arab Gulf through a more grounded and personal perspective.

In August 1832, a 13-year-old Greek orphan enrolled at UGA and received an A.B. degree in 1835 as the first international student to graduate from any American university. At the Hargrett Library, among Professor Malthus Ward’s documents (Ward developed the old Botanical Garden in Athens while teaching Natural History from 1832 to 1842), the presenter found ten little strips of paper on which Ward wrote the names of his students. The May 1835 list included the name “Diomatari.”
This illustrated presentation chronicles some of the untold story of John Diomatari’s astounding life. He arrived in Boston aboard “Old Ironsides” on the Fourth of July 1828, became a lawyer, lived in Eatonton, was written about by Joel Chandler Harris, and was appointed U.S. Consul to Greece.

This 61st art spectacular in Venice has 80 country pavilions, 30 of which are in permanent buildings, and an additional 111 invited artists. This doesn't include about 20 collateral exhibits where major galleries and artists just show up! The U.S. pavilion features artist Alma Allen highlighting large-scale, site-responsive, and transformative sculptural works. Not a travel log, this session will present as much of this art as the presenter managed to visit.

As international attention to endangered populations of plants and animals has grown over the past few decades, so too has interest in ‘endangered’ languages. Out of the nearly 7,000 languages spoken around the globe, almost 10% are ‘moribund’—or nearly extinct. In this course, we will explore the phenomenon of language loss, a process that has had a long and complicated history in communities around the world. We will discuss issues such as language policy and linguistic activism, exploring how even in local communities in Georgia, linguistic discrimination continues to be a source of language prejudice among speakers of other languages and dialects. The course materials will include a variety of readings and videos with the objective of exposing students to issues of language preservation. No background in global languages or linguistics is necessary.

Take a look behind the curtain into the process of restoring the farm where Jimmy Carter grew up. Most of the 39th president's formative years were spent on a small farm four miles east of Plains, Georgia. There he was nurtured by a close-knit family, learned the values of hard work, and developed relationships that deeply affected his consequential life of public service. The presenter had a front-row seat into the effort of restoring the farm to its appearance in the mid-1930's.

We will discuss the chaotic history of what are now six, maybe seven separate countries and cultures divided by geography and religion. This discussion will include attention to Ivo Andric's novel, The Bridge Over The Drina, arguably the best book to read to understand how this region became so splintered and violent. Andric won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1961. Our program will include many photos of the speaker’s and his wife’s tour of these countries in the spring of 2026.
