On November 3, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 in the Senate will be up for re-election. Hundreds of local and state offices and issues will be settled. Turn-out in POTUS elections is around 60%. Mid-terms? Barely 40%! This mid-term may be more consequential than any recent election. So, let's dig into all the national issues, looking at how they rank—by party, affiliation, generation and region. We'll look at some of the better forecasts of results and we'll conduct our own on-line, in-class polls of issues/results. YES, we will forecast the House-Senate results by party!

Redistricting is the process of drawing electoral maps for Congress, state representatives, and even your county officials. A seemingly benign process, redistricting has become the battleground in the fight for fair representation across the country. Recent Supreme Court decisions have rewritten the rules for considering diversity in map drawing, paving the way for more partisan gerrymandering. This class will focus specifically on redistricting is performed in Georgia. We’ll learn the basics, then explore current issues with the process. We’ll discuss potential solutions. Time permitting, we may engage in a map-drawing exercise so that groups of students can try their hand at drawing fair maps.

Classical liberalism is not another term for left-wing politics but a moral and political philosophy based on individual rights, liberty, reason, science, and the rule of law. The American Constitution is based on classical liberal ideals: A system of representative democracy creating a marketplace of ideas for our various political parties. In this class, we follow historian Helena Rosenblatt as she guides us on a tour of the history of liberal ideas from ancient Rome, through the Enlightenment era, the U. S. Constitution, and the Progressive era. We explore how liberalism is currently being challenged by authoritarian leaders worldwide and share ideas about how the ideals of liberalism can still be made relevant in the modern era.
