Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Professional Certificate   

This three-part, highly interactive online professional certificate is designed for business professionals interested in gaining proficiency in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) theory and practices. It introduces participants to key concepts and methods for effective promotion and development of DEI principles in the workplace. Participants finish the certification with a clear analysis of gender, race, intersectionality, and privilege as well as proven methods for implementing DEI principles to effect substantive change. Specific resources include field-tested analysis, real-world applications, and research-based principles and guidelines.

Course is taught by Theresa Floyd, Associate Professor of Management; Elizabeth Hubble, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Director; and Tobin Miller Shearer, African-American Studies Program Director.

Topics covered include:

  • The Iceberg Metaphor for Dismantling Racism
  • Broad framework for making change (Charlotte Bunch's 4-step model)
  • Framework for understanding and acknowledging privilege and oppression
  • Framework for understanding intersectionality (i.e. why we can't talk about gender without talking about race, class, sexuality, etc.)
  • Tools for understanding gender identity and sexuality in today's climate
  • Tools for understanding, assessing, and shifting language around gender, race, class, and sexuality
  • Identify who we are
  • Naming and claiming our Sphere of Influence
  • Applying Growth Mindset to DEI
  • Determine Employee Code of Conduct
  • Identifying and celebrating the DEI Employee of the Month
  • Recruiting for diverse candidate pools
  • Rethinking job requirements and selection tools
  • Designing voluntary mentoring programs
  • Tools for creating a diversity task force
  • Creating a culture of inclusivity
  • Applying the iceberg metaphor in your business office
