COUN 495 Substance Abuse & Addictive Disorders   

Students will learn the history of addiction treatment, commonly misused substances and their effects, and how to assess someone for a substance use disorder, as well as choose a diagnosis. Students will learn the preferred forms of group and individual treatment, and practice application through case studies and role plays. Students will hear from practitioners in the field on issues such as university students seeking treatment, ASAM assessment and levels of care, local resources, trauma and addictions, addiction treatment in private practice, as well as licensure. 

The class will meet face-to-face in Missoula.

This is an in-person learning opportunity. Course is Traditional Letter Grading. Course is available for Graduate credit OR 45 Continuing Education Clock Hours from the National Board of Certified Counselors. Please use the portal below to register, no matter which award you wish to receive.

Registration deadline is May 12, 2026.

The University of Montana Department of Counseling has been approved by the NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 3033. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. UM Dept. of Counseling is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
