A New, Exotic Insect in Hattiesburg! Ecology of the Two-Spined Trap-Jaw Ant - HB Zoom
The two-spined trap-jaw ant, Odontomachus haematodus, is a ground-nesting ant native to South America that has been introduced to Mississippi. We will talk about why this ant is so interesting, how to identify it and discuss the research our lab is doing with this species at the Peck House here in Hattiesburg! Hattiesburg's ‘Book Farm:’ Charles Heartman and a Failed Writers Colony - HB Zoom
Before coming to Mississippi, German emigre Charles Heartman was a well-known rare book dealer, foreign correspondent in the Balkans and society reporter for The New York Herald. In 1936, he moved to Hattiesburg and bought 400 acres south of Hattiesburg, naming his estate "The Book Farm." This talk will discuss Heartman’s life and career, efforts to make The Book Farm a utopian writer's retreat, and his impact on African American literature.

Ice Ages Through Time - HB Zoom
There have been at least five major ice ages in the past 2 billion years. Hypotheses exist to explain both large-scale ice ages and smaller ebbs and flows. Crucial factors include: atmospheric composition, changes in earth orbit, plate tectonic, variations in solar output, the dynamics of the earth–moon system and the impact of large meteorites and volcanism. We will explore these possibilities and I will tell the exact year of the next ice age (or NOT!).

This course will look at the movement for women's jury service in the state and the factors that contributed to the prolonged exclusion of Mississippi women on juries. Women's Basketball: We've Come a Long Way, Baby - HB Zoom
Women's basketball has come a long, long way - in Mississippi and beyond. There was women's basketball before Title IX, but that historic legislation, passed in 1972, spearheaded the sport's growth. Mississippi women were pioneers in the early days before the sport's explosion. Primarily, the Delta State women's teams of the early to mid-1970s showed people in our state that women could not only play the sport but excel at it.
